Any class will do. What do you want to do? Hack and slash? Heal? Disrupt and degenerate? Nuke? Attack from afar?
EDIT
Or you could always make twin Necros. Name could be for example “Rock and Roll” and the other “Roll and Rock”. Copy everything the same on the creation screen and always wear the same armor and weapons

Mesmers suck in PvE.
Go necromancer, that way you have synergy, and you can run MM/Curser.

I like the MM / Curser team as well.
Also consider your secondary profession options. Monk and Ranger can add some useful skills to the mix.

I would suggest going monk as primary or secondary, as the prophecies monk henchmen are pretty worthless compared to a human monk in the earlier areas.

Can't go wrong with MM, remember, MM's are fun!

No, mesmer don't suck in PvE.
They are like MMs in end-game areas or superior runes.
They just aren't good ENOUGH.
On-topic:
I'd say get something like ele/monky/warrior.
That way you'll at least get into the same teams!

Leave it to upier to compare a sub-par PvE hexer to a character worth two slots through 75% of all three campaigns...

Well aren't you Captain Obvious!
The mesmer is sub-par. That doesn't mean it "sucks".
The mm is worth the slot in 75% of the campaigns. That's why I mentioned the end-game areas.
I guess leave it to MV to agree but still have the urge to dish out insults ...

Besides, as long as you play NM it doesn't matter what you take. You could run a warrior/elementalist and cast a MS every minute and win at NM.

Depends what you want to do. If you plan to remain in pve, beating up on idiotic ai, then make a necro and lulzwtfpwn the same monsters over and over. If you want to ever play pvp, then make something useful, which would be everything but a necro.

From a purely PvE point of view, in prophs, a dual necro team would be hard to beat.
Monks are always a good bet as well due to the farming potential.
Mesmers are fun to play, but by and large redundant in PvE.

SS Necro + MM Necro are a dream team.
But many Rangers with Pets and a Curse Necro also make a pretty good team (Mark of Pain e.g.)
Basically, you want lots of physical attackers, and ranged ones like Rangers with their anti-melee stances, Barrage and high elemental resistance go very well with a Necro.
I usually play with my Necro as SS/MoP/Barbs/Enfeebling Necro, and have Jin and Margrid as Barrage/Pet Rangers and Olias as MM.
Your friend could also play a Paragon, as player Paragons have even better abilities than Paragon heroes.

It might be fun. It's hardly optimal.

Yeah, P and N have nice synergy, but unfortunately he only owns Prophecies, at least that was my impression.
